Airports are huge and exciting places. We talked to three people who all work in the same airport. Each person has a different but important job.
Tristan Manning, 42, a terminal manager 'I started my job on the information desk in the central hall and did that two years. People were generally friendly. They asked many questions I didn't really know the answers to. So I often had to ask my colleagues for the answers. This sometimes made the customers angry. Last year I became the terminal manager which means I have to deal with customer complaints and health issues. In fact, I spend a lot of my time going around the airport talking to people on my phone.' Peter Macintosh, 21, a baggage handler 'Doing this job makes me really fit because I carry luggage and put it into trucks. The best thing is the people I work with. They always make jokes and have fun. The worst part of my job is the shift work. I often work unusual hours. I think I'll look for a new job because this job is sometimes boring. I work very hard and I'm often tired when I finish.' Vanessa Carp, 46, an airport engineer 'At university I studied engineering and then I worked for an automotive company for a few years. I was quite bored. So I decided to look for a new job. When I saw the advert for an airport engineer I decided to apply. There are all kinds of things to deal with here, such as: escalators, lifts and air conditioners. Things break all the time. I love my job because everyday there is something new to repair and improve.' (Based on Oxford University Press, New English File, pre-intermediate student's workbook) |
