It all started with a kettle and a cup of tea One of the most important inventions to come from the industrial revolution was the steam engine. People first used it to pump water out of coal and tin mines. Steam power was already 50 years old when someone asked the Scottish engineer and businessman James Watt to repair an engine in 1764. According to the story, Watt was watching a kettle while making tea when he had an idea. He realized that by keeping the boiling water in a cylinder he could keep the water hot. This made the process three times more efficient. In 1776 Watt built a steam engine and showed it worked better than the other machines at that time.
