C. Read the text again, with a dictionary if you'd like to check some words.
This time answer the questions below to check you understand the text. 1. What's the writer saying in the first sentence? 2. What does networking 'outside of its walls' mean? 3. Where are we most likely to find new opportunities, such as a new job? 4. Why does the writer compare networks to good investments? 5. What problems can you think of for rule one? 6. What problems can you think of for rule two? 7. Does rule two have to be a big favour to them? 8. Does the writer guarantee instant success if you follow the two rules? |

Now check your answers:
1. What's the writer saying in the first sentence? We should already know that networking is really important for our job. 2. What does networking 'outside of its walls' mean? It means we should network with people in other companies not just in our company. 3. Where are we most likely to find new opportunities, such as a new job? Not from friends or close colleagues but from people we don't know very well ('a loose connection'). 4. Why does the writer compare networks to good investments? They are compared because when they both are successful, e.g. making good network and making lots of money from an investment, it is a slow process and won't always happen the way you expect. 5. What problems can you think of for rule one? Your answer. 6. What problems can you think of for rule two? Your answer. 7. Does rule two have to be a big favour to them? No, it can just be a small thing like making a connection with someone or sharing useful information. 8. Does the writer guarantee instant success if you follow the two rules? No, it can take a long time. But over a long time you might benefit from following the rules. |
D. Now have a quick look at some of the comments below the post and think about what you would write.
Do you agree or disagree with the post and the two rules? Could the rules be useful in your business culture? If you don't work in business try to think of the two rules in a different way, for example, how to make new friends or how to find a husband or wife! Then write a 'comment' to show your opinions about the post. |
